In the next Armchair Travel, join us for a screening of "Edible Paradise: Growing the Food Forest Revolution " on April 15 at 2:00 pm at the Shore Cultural Centre in Room 41.
This 2018 documentary explores the "food forest" movement in New Zealand. The film chronicles efforts of local food campaigners and communities to transform urban and unused land into productive, perennial gardens.
A major focus of the documentary is on Christchurch, following the 2011/2012 earthquakes. The film shows how residents worked to save heritage fruit trees from demolition and envision "red zones" (areas where buildings were removed) as future edible gardens.
The documentary also follows Robina McCurdy and the Localizing Food Project over five years as they advocate for community orchards and public fruit/nut tree plantings.
You’ll also learn about the importance of preserving genetic diversity and medical benefits found in heritage plant varieties.
Beyond sustainability, the film emphasizes the social benefits of people coming together to share and connect through food production. Directed by Rich Humphreys, the runtime is 70 minutes.
