  • A.F.C Wimbledon -- We Rock Hard

I always thought my band would be named My Dining Room Table. It would be a band with fuzzy guitars and kind of a mumbling singer with hair that covered his eyes when he sang. He would wear skinny jeans and ripped-up t-shirts. The drummer would have real long hair and wear shiny shoes. There would be two guitar players who would stand at opposite sides of the stage and not do much more than sway back and forth. The whole band would be kind of a laid-back affair, but of course the music would be so awesome that the audience stood at attention for the entire show.

Wikipedia had other ideas. The latest Internet meme allows Wikipedia to randomly name your band, while other website give you an album title and cover art. So here's mine:

My band is A.F.C. Wimbledon. Our album is called "For That ...

  • The most awesome music sites besides this one

People tell me all the time, "Your blog is so awesome! I read it all the time and then pass out like I've just come down off a sugar high." And I say, "Why, thank you. It really is awesome, isn't it?" And they say, "Yes it is. It is so awesome I'm sure you know all the other awesome music blogs out there. What are some good ones?"

So now I reveal to you, dear sugar-high-like-passer-outers, some of my favorite blogs that don't have the initials MML ...

Stereogum is a really good blog, especially if you have a bushy beard and wear glasses. It consistently gets votes for music blog of the year from various sources. It finished second in the 2008 Weblog Awards  to Glide Magazine's Hidden Track, which is a bit more diversified in its musical tatstes. Hidden Track also posts a lot of music news, including a recent bit ...

  • Morrissey

As a student at John Carroll University, I learned a few things:

    * Jesuit means priest who likes beer.

    * Some professors like it if you call them by their first name, but it's weird.

    * There was a band called The Smiths that played really depressing songs that girls loved.

The guy who fronted that band, Morrissey, is still around. He's just released his ninth solo CD, "Years of Refusal". And based on some of the song titles he's still providing that same mopey music that girls who attended John Carroll really, really like: "Something Is Squeezing My Skull", "One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell", and "It's Not Your Birthday Anymore."

So it looks like Morrissey's still putting out really depressing songs that girls love.

Nothing tops "How Soon Is Now?" for depressing Smith's lyrics, though. A song about people needing love concludes with ...

  • Your Valentine's Day soundtrack

With Valentine's Day coming up one of my coworkers suggested I survey the women at the library on their favorite romantic songs. And I thought ...

... what the heck are you talking about? Why not ask all the men at the library? Better yet, why not just make up my own darn list?? I mean, what kind of nutball goes and asks women their opinions on love and romance. Puh-leeze.

You want a recipe for musical love, you come right here. No need for surveys.

Here's where we start with your Valentine's Day soundtrack: The theme from The Love Boat. Not only a great song, but great lyrics -- "Love, exciting and new/Come aboard, we're expecting you ... The Love Boat/Soon we'll be making another run/The Love Boat/Promises something for everyone." And not only that, but you've got love, and you've got a boat, and ...

  • And the Grammy went to ...

I suppose I should have been on here bragging about my Grammy picks much earlier. After all, I did hit six out of my eight predictions from last week, missing only on Record of the Year and Album of the Year.

In case you missed the awards show last Sunday, here's the big winners:

Album of the Year: "Raising Sand"/Robert Plant and Allison Krauss

Record of the Year: "Please Read the Letter"/Robert Plant and Allison Krauss

Song of the Year: "Viva La Vida"/Coldplay

    Best New Artist: Adele

Best Rock Album: "Viva La Vida/Coldplay

    Best Rap Song: "Lollipop"/Lil Wayne

Best Rap Album: "Tha Carter III"/Lil Wayne

    Best County Album: "Troubadour"/George Strait

Oh, and me, since I was right on six of these. Probably should have had the guts to pick Plant and Krauss for Album of the Year, but it's probably better ...

  • Grammys Mike likes

Last Sunday we had the Super Bowl. Next Sunday we have the Grammys. You've probably figured that out if you've seen EPL's Music Mike Likes display which features many Grammy nominees.

What does one have to do with the other? Well, besides occupying my Sunday nights for two weeks in February, they are both occasions on which you should listen to me.

After all, I did pick the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the Super Bowl before the playoffs began. I also predicted Gary Russell would score the game's first touchdown and Hines Ward would make the first catch of the game, but what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Anyway, what this all means is that my Grammy predictions are as good as a gold record. A Cleveland Browns fan who picks the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the Super Bowl has to know what he's talking ...
