If you have ever been to an amusement park, then you will know that roller coasters are one of those rides that can be both thrilling and terrifying! The excitement and adrenaline rush is something that thrill seekers come from many distances to experience. Roller coasters have come a long way since the 1600s when the first rides were ice slides in Russia. As modern technology improves, these rides keep getting bigger, faster, and taller. Almost every year another extreme coaster is created, which attracts people of all ages for a super thrill!

  • The oldest operating roller coaster built in 1902 is Leap-the-Dips at Lakemont Park in Altoona, Pennsylvania
  • Roller coasters are made of either wood or steel. Steel coasters offer a smoother ride and more amazing designs with twists and loops
  • Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio holds the record for the most coasters in one park, with an impressive 17 roller coasters to choose from
  • Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey is the tallest and fastest coaster in the world. It is 456 feet tall and reaches 128 miles per hour. This ride lasts less than a minute where riders feel weightless at the top before they whip straight down through a spiral
  • Safety always comes first when operating a roller coaster. Today computers can be programmed to run the thrill rides with few or no mistakes. Many amusement parks hire people to inspect each ride before they open
