Cheetahs

Cheetahs are the world’s fastest land animal reaching speeds of 70 miles per hour over short bursts. They used their speed to catch animals such as antelopes, rabbits, hares, birds, and lizards. Most cheetahs live on the grasslands of Africa however they are also found in the Middle East region of Asia. Cheetahs must quickly catch their prey. Traveling at such high speeds causes them to tire quickly. Cheetahs are built for speed! They have small heads, they are light weight, and tall at the shoulder. These are just a few of the characteristics that make cheetah so fast.

Did You Know?

  • Cheetahs can go from 0 to 45 miles per hour in less than 3 seconds.
  • Long tails help cheetahs to steer much like the rudder of a boat.
  • Cheetahs’ claws grip the ground as they run much in the same way that track spikes grip the ground for sprinters.
  • Lions, leopards, and hyenas attack and kill cheetah cubs.
  • The animals mentioned above also steal food from cheetahs by chasing them away from their prey.
