Tips to Try

Rhyme: Here's a little rhyme to remind children how to hold the scissors in the proper thumb on top position: "Fingers on the bottom, thumb on top. Open up the scissors and chop, chop, chop."

Draw simple shapes and lines on scrap paper or newspaper then let your child practice cutting on the lines.

Be sure to talk to your child about your home rules for using scissors.  Let them know where and when it will be safe for them to use scissors at your house.
