How Do I - Borrowing Library Items

How do I reserve an item for pickup at the library?

You may place a reserve for books, audiocassettes, compact discs, DVDs, fiction videos and non-fiction videos, at the Information Desks, a public terminal, or from your home computer.

When your reserved item is available, you will notified by telephone, e-mail or postcard. Let us know your preference. The item will be held in your name at the Circulation Desk for five days.

The library card which was used to place the reserve must be the card used to pick up the reserve.

Can I renew my items over the telephone?

You have the convenience of renewing at home or via your home computer without making a trip to the Library. Call 216-261-5300 ext. 103.

The clerk will ask you for your library card number. when renewing one or more of the items on your card, read the titles to the clerk so they may be renewed individually.

Most books, compact discs, CD-ROMs, and audios may be renewed. Contacting us on or before the due date will enable us to renew your items. The following items cannot be renewed:

    • If 10 or more items are late.
    • Items that are needed to fill reserves
    • Magazines
    • Many interlibrary loan items
    • Teacher Loan items
    • EEK! (educational enrichment kits)
    • New Release DVDs

Occasionally during busy times, it may be necessary to take your name and telephone number and call you back.

Lost, Damaged, or Missing Items

You are responsible for any items checked out on your card, including the replacement cost for lost or damaged items. These will be charged to your card and must be paid in full.

A suggestion to help avoid damage is to return your borrowed items in a plastic bag during inclement weather. Many times, when books get wet, they require replacement and the cost is passed on to the borrower.

Any library material returned that is part of a set will not be discharged until all parts, including inserts and booklets, are returned.

All missing and damaged items that belong to another library must be handled according to the owning library's policies.

Borrowing Privileges

No additional materials may be checked out if $10 in fines are owed, if 10 or more items are overdue, if the card is expired and fines are owed or if you have 50 items already borrowed.

Items requested for another patron cannot be renewed. New Release DVDs and magazines cannot be renewed. Videos and DVDs cannot be consecutively charged out to the same card. Videos and DVDs may not be available for browsing or charge out until all check-in procedures are completed.

Senior citizens (60 and older) are exempt from fines on materials except new books and DVDs.

When an item is 21 days overdue, a reminder notice is sent to the patron. When an item is 42 days overdue, the system assumes the item is lost, adds the cost of the item to the borrower's record and a bill is mailed to the patron. Every three years personal information is updated. We request at that time that any outstanding fines, fees, or lost items are paid.
